Tire Rubber Modified Asphalt – A Best Way To Reduce Black PollutionTimes：2018-04-26 Author：zhengyangtire
Waste rubber is the second largest polymer pollutant after waste plastics. Waste rubber products mainly come from waste tires, rubber tubes, rubber belts, rubber foot-wears, base plates and other industrial products, as well as leftover bits and pieces produced by those rubber factories. Due to far more slow degradation, waste rubber products stacked in the open air for a long time not only cause the waste of resources, but has already become a kind of black pollution rapidly spreading around the world. Therefore, the recycling of waste rubber has received extensive attention.
Actually, scrap tires are not scraps, they are also treasures containing rubber compound as high as 60%.
It’s a great technology to blend tire rubber powder with hot asphalt cement to produce tire rubber modified asphalt, which has already been widely applied in road paving. Take a road about 45 kilometers long for example, appropriately 5500 tons of modified asphalt will be used, which is equivalent of 110 thousand of scrap tires from those household cars. The reuse of scrap tires not only solved their pollution to the environment, but also created better economic benefits.
Its estimated that, in 2015, tire production in China was more than 600 million, and there were about 10 million tons of waste tires, which has been rising at an annual rate of 5% ~ 6%. Large piles of waste tires are unable to automatically degrade, which not only occupy the land resources, but has the risk of causing fire and becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes. How to dispose of these solid wastes has already become a difficult problem faced by countries around the world.
According to related experts, the current methods of dealing with waste tire rubber mainly include: direct use, tire pyrolysis, producing refurbishing tires and production vulcanized rubber powder. In the former-mentioned processing methods, waste tire rubber powder modified asphalt is undoubtedly the best way of tire utilization regarding developing circular economy.
This is because paving road with tire rubber modified asphalt can not only improve the high temperature stability, cracking resistance under low temperature, anti-aging and durability of the asphalt, but can replace the currently widely-used and expensive styrene – butadiene – styrene copolymer (SBS) and styrene-butadiene rubber polymer modifier, which will effectively reduce the cost of road construction and save oil resources.
Compared with SBS modified asphalt, tire rubber modified asphalt is much more cost-effective and has superior rutting-resistant ability.
